Designer Website: Aaron Draplin
Aaron Draplin is an all-American graphic designer known for his thick lines and bold personality. This website features Aaron Draplin through his life, work, and style while providing a means to communicate directly with Draplin Design Company. The aim of this website is to create a user-friendly introduction into the works of Aaron Draplin while featuring experimental web design with supporting conventional web pages to clearly communicate the works of Aaron Draplin. This site supports web, tablet, and mobile layouts with unique and accessible features to build on user experience. A set of custom Draplin inspired icons are also included to bring Aaron Draplin’s energy into the interface. A geometrical multi-typeface system is in use to reflect the bold personality of Draplin alongside a greyscale color theme to tame the intense color palates used in his various designs.
Visual Identity
This website utilizes Almaq Refined for display type and Neuzeit Grotesk Regular for body type to imitate Aaron Daplins use of geometric forms and san serif lettering. The similarity of the x-height and the contrast in weight of these two typefaces provides a wonderful symmetry that supports readability while capturing a strong style scape. A grey scale color palette is incorporated to keep the viewer from over-stimulation.
Icons
Included in this website is a set of icons inspired by the work of Aaron Draplin. Thick lines, breaking constraints, and just about everything a big personality like him would include.
Figma
Wire framing and prototyping were done in Figma. Plugins such as Breakpoint were used in Figma to give the website resizable features. Videos and captures were then taken in Figma to present the website.
Grid System
With an experimental layout for the homepage, the core pages follow a more conventional grid system to promote accessibility and user experience. All pages follow a 12 column system with 70px margins. Each element is utilizing spacing divisible by 4 to aid in the web creation process once passed to a web developer.
